Thoughts on Avatar.
Someone once said that there are really no new stories, just the same stories that are told in different ways.
With Avatar, we have a story that’s similar to both Last of the Mohicans and Dances with Wolves, but it’s the way that’s it’s presented that makes the film stand out. Bright colors, lush backgrounds and fantastic cgi models really put Avatar it’s in own place. I loved the whole connectivity between everything. And the 3D was wonderful. The best I’ve seen since “Coraline”, hands down. Visually, I dare you to find a more beautiful looking film. Saw it twice.
Is it flawed? Oh yeah. In the sense that some of the dialogue (particularly from the Col. Quarich character) feels like it was from the 90’s. You can also almost see what’s coming ahead in the story as well if you’re paying attention. If you’ve seen Aliens (plot movement wise), you’ve an idea of Avatar. Cameron could have had a writing assistant on this, it would have helped.
At least the movie’s not another remake. :)
